How to Add More Steps to Your Day
By Jessica Nguyen, B.S. in Health Education
You’ve probably heard that the average person should be exercising for at least 2.5 hours per week. However, research is showing that any physical activity at all is better than none. The National Institutes of Health explained that people who walked briskly or did other activity at only half the recommended amount gained nearly 2 years in life expectancy compared to inactive people.
Simple Steps to Increase Your Steps Throughout the Day
Park your car further away
Picking a parking spot further away from work or a store is an easy way to help add steps. You’ll have less competition for your parking spot as well!
Take the stairs instead of the elevator
If you have a fitness tracker, you’ll get more steps and more flights!
Take a short walk after a meal
Not only will you get some extra steps in, you’ll improve your digestion as well.
March in place whenever you’re waiting
March while you brush your teeth, cook, or fold your laundry.
Avoid drive-thru lines at restaurants, banks, and pharmacies
Get the extra steps from walking from the parking lot and then through the building!
Vacuum, mop, and clean more often
You’ll have more steps and a sparkling home!
